THE FIRST TRAILER FOR The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has been confirmed to accompany The Adventures of Tin TinAND PRODUCER KATHLEEN KENNEDY has acknowledged that Herge’s The Calculus Affair, will probably be the basis for the second Tin Tin film to be directed by Peter Jackson … DAN GILROY, writer of the Hugh Jackman vehicle, Real Steel, will write The Annihilator.  Project is based on a new Stan Lee created character, said to be a globetrotting hero of Chinese heritage … PHILLIP K. DICK’S Now Wait for the Last Year, has been optioned for a motion picture.  Dick’s daughter, Isla Dick Hackett is on board as a producer … A HIGHLY PLACED SOURCE has reiterated that “Khan” (as in Star Trek II: The Wrath of) will in fact be the villain in J.J. Abrams second Star Trek feature … DANIEL CRAIG is currently negotiating to do 5! more James Bond films … RIDLEY SCOTT has commented on H.R. Giger’s involvement in his Alien Prequel, Prometheus: I brought him in, I showed him what we were doing, showed him the story and he liked it a lot.  So he’s doing a little bit of work for me.  He’s been doing some murals, big murals, which we’ll see is almost one of the first chambers we encounter when we land where we’re going.”  Scott also added that the “Xenomorph,” otherwise known as the original “ALIEN,” will NOT be seen in the film at all … GUY (Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows) RITCHIE will take over directing duties from Steven Soderbergh on the The Man From U.N.C.L.E. … DIRECTOR PATTY (Monster) JENKINS has been fired from Thor 2, supposedly over “creative differences.”  Natalie Portman, who only signed on to work with Jenkins, is said to be extremely unhappy … AND IN THE TOTALLY LAME DEPARTMENT — in addition to previous disappointing comments made by director Steven Spielberg on the progress of a proposed fifth Indiana Jones film — George Lucas has now commented, “...I know what it’s about, but I just have to find a MacGuffin that fits into the arena we’re working in.” … WRITER STEVEN (Schindler’s List) ZAILLIAN is looking to remake the Spanish cult hit Timecrimes … DAVID FINCHER has commented on his in-the-works $200 million 3D version of Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: “The thing that’s interesting to me is a science-fiction movie that takes place five years after the Civil War; the idea of what does science-fiction look like through the eyes of somebody 120 years ago?” … CBS HOME VIDEO will release Star Trek: The Next Generation – Season One, remastered for Blu-ray late next year.  The initial “demo” is still scheduled for release on January 1st. … CASTING AGENT MARION DOUGHERTY passed away on December 4th at the age of 88 of natural causes.  She was responsible for giving numerous Hollywood stars their big breaks (Gene Hackman, Dustin Hoffman, Robert Redford, ) and casting films such as Slaughterhouse-Five, Tim Burton’s Batman films, Spies Like Us, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, and LadyhawkeCAPTAIN AMERICA co-creator Joe Simon passed away at the age of 98 on Wednesday night.  Simon created Cap with Jack Kirby for Timely Comics in 1941, only months before the bombing of Pearl Harbor.  He also co-wrote and illustrated Captain Marvel (also with Kirby) and later founded Mad Magazine … AND SADLY, Mash veteran Harry Morgan died on December 7th at the age of 96.  In addition to starring roles in films like High Noon, The Big Clock, and Disney’s The Cat From Outer Space, Morgan made appearances in numerous television programs throughout his 56 year career.  Some of these included: Rod Serling’s Night Gallery, The Twilight Zone (1988 series,) and Third Rock From the Sun.  All of them will be missed …

PRODUCER NEAL MORITZ (of the upcoming Total Recall remake) will next remake Paul Verhoven’s tale of Robert Heinlein’s seminal SF novel Starship TroopersCHRIS COLOMBUS’ production company 1492 Pictures will adapt Charles Yu’s SF novel How to Live Safely in a Science Fiction Universe.  First-timer Brendan Bellomo will direct … THERE WILL BE A 6 MIN. PROLOGUE to Christopher Nolan’s third — and reportedly last — Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises.  The IMAX footage will screen before Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, starting 12/16 … RIDLEY SCOTT has confirmed that he will direct the Blade Runner follow-up.  Referred to as a story taking place in the same universe as the original film (ala Prometheus,) Scott’s new Blade Runner film will reportedly NOT be starring Harrison Ford.  All new characters will be the focus here.  Not much else is known, though Scott does offer that the film is “liable to be a sequel” … SPEAKING OF HARRISON FORD: he’s now rumored to be taking a role in the film based on Orson Scott Card’s seminal SF novel, Ender’s Game.  The film will also star Hailee (True Grit) Steinfeld, who desperately wanted a part in the adaptation of The Hunger Games earlier this year, but wasn’t chosen by Producers.  Ender’s Game is scheduled to be directed by Gavin (Wolverine) Hood … TOM CRUISE, who will already soon be seen in the “scorched Earth” sci-fi film Horizons, for director Joseph (Tron: Legacy) Krinski, will apparently also be seen in Doug (Jumper) Liman’s We Mortals Are.  Based on Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s 2004 SF Novel, All You Need is KillACTOR PETER WELLER has joined the cast of J.J. Abrams sequel to his wildly popular reboot of the Star Trek franchise.  In addition to his work in both Robocop and Buckaroo Banzai, Weller also guested in a multi-episode story arc of TV’s Star Trek: Enterprise.  Actress Alice Eve has been cast as well.  No word on what role either will play, but it has been divulged that Eve’s character will be new to the Star Trek canon.  There is also no word on the film’s title, though Abrams has stated it will not be called Star Trek 2 … WRITER / DIRECTOR GEORGE MILLER has stated that he is currently finishing up the last of THREE new screenplays, which will create a new Mad Max trilogy.  The first of which, Mad Max: Fury Road, goes into production in April with actor Tom (Star Trek: Nemesis, The Dark Knight Rises) Hardy stepping in for Mel Gibson, as the young Max … ACTOR BEN WISLAW will take over the role of “Q” in Daniel Craig’s third James Bond outing, SkyfallRIDDICK, David Twohy’s prequel to Pitch Black, has resumed filming after resolving a dispute with the commercial property owner of the Montreal Studio where the film is being made … WARNER BROS.’ planned remake of Michael Crichton’s film Westworld, is now kaput.  Dito for the proposed remake of Peter Hyams 1981 SF film, Outland, and Steven Soderbergh’s planned film of the 1960’s cult TV series, The Man From U.N.C.L.ETHIS PAST NOVEMBER, Ron (Hellboy) Perlman joined the production of Guillermo del Toro’s action epic, Pacific Rim.  del Toro has termed his film, “Giant monsters vs. giant robots.  Twenty-five-story-high robots beating the crap out of twenty-five-story-high monsters.”  Idris (Prometheus) Elba is also on board … THE FIRST HOBBIT TRAILER is said to be due in theaters this Christmas … DAVID FINCHER and Andrew (Se7en) Kevin Walker are working on yet another version of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea for Disney … THE REMAKE OF ROBOCOP is going ahead, with director Jose’ Padilha at the helm.  This time focusing much more on the actual transition of Murphy from man to machine … DIRECTOR ANDREW STANTON has clarified why he changed Edgar Rice Burrough’s SF novel A Princess of Mars to simply, John Carter: “I’d already changed it from ‘A Princess Of Mars’ to ‘John Carter Of Mars.’ I don’t like to get fixated on it, but I changed Princess Of Mars… because not a single boy would go.  And then the other truth is, no girl would go to see ‘John Carter Of Mars.’ So I said, “I don’t won’t to do anything out of fear, I hate doing things out of fear, but I can’t ignore that truth.”  He added, “…I’ve really worked hard to make all of this an origin story. It’s about a guy becoming ‘John Carter.’ So I’m not misrepresenting what this movie is, it’s ‘John Carter.’ Mars is going to stick on any other film in the series. But by then, it won’t have a stigma to it.” DIRECTOR MARTIN (Casino Royale) Campbell has taken on the film adaption of the 1980’s TV show, The Fall Guy.  For those who don’t remember, the show was about a Hollywood stunt man who moonlights as a bounty hunter for the LA Court System …WITH MEN IN BLACK III now in post production, producer Steven Spielberg has turned his attention to both, Robopocalypse — a would-be adaptation an SF novel about robots taking over the Earth — and a second attempt at a When World’s Collide remake; his first was Deep Impact.  Spielberg is also deep in development on Jurassic Park IV, and a project that has been long in development (25 years): a TV miniseries based upon the Stephen King/Peter Straub novel, The Talisman.  He’s also trying to convince director Michael Bay to helm a likely Transformers 4.  Spielberg spoke regarding the possibility: “I hope so, because I think he made the best of the three with the last one.  I certainly can’t imagine anyone other than Michael being equipped to make another ‘Transformers.’  He invented a genre and he’s got the secret formula.”  Michael Bay has stated that he will consider it. Shia LaBeouf has stated he will not.  And regarding that forthcoming Indiana Jones 5 film, Spielberg says this: “It’s up to George.  We’ve already agreed on the genre of the fifth movie; we already have a concept in mind.  I don’t know where George is with the story.  There is no Indy 5 until George says there is.”JOE DANTE is currently shooting a comedy about a twenty-something werewolf guy who falls in love with a twenty-something vampire girl, and the hijinks which result from it.  Monster Love is due out sometime next year.  Let’s hope it gets a release here, unlike Dante’s The Hole, which only got released in the UK … HELENA BONHAM CARTER has stated that Tim Burton’s re-imagining of the old Gothic TV soap, Dark Shadows, is, “…very original and it’s kind of uncategorizable.  It’s going to be impossible to sell, frankly, because it’s just so … it’s a soap opera, but it’s very, very subtle.  I don’t know.  We’ll see.  It’s a ghost story, but then it’s an unhappy vampire story.”JAMES CAMERON still has both Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 on his schedule.  Along with Battle Angel, his version of the Japanese Anime Battle Angel Alita.  It’s budget is estimated to be around $200 Million … SAM RAIMI is currently filming Oz: The Great and Powerful.  A prequel to L. Frank Baum’s original 1900 story, which explains how the Wizard came to be in OZ in the first place.  The budget on this one has also been pegged at around $200 Million … BILL MCKINNEY, a frequent Clint Eastwood collaborator, died on December 1st of esophageal cancer.  McKinney, who’s career spanned 45 years in TV and film, guested on both Galactica ’80 and The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles.  And had film roles in The Outlaw Josey Wales, First Blood, and Back to the Future III.  He was 80 years old … SPEAKING OF GALACTICA, director Bryan Singer, now in post on Jack the Giant Killer, still has a movie version of the 1978 Battlestar Galactica TV series in development.  Singer says the film would bear no relation to the more recent re-imagining involving Ron Moore, but would instead be a faithful adaptation of the original TV Series to the silver screen.
